Heart Art: A New Year’s Revolution

January 22, 2016

This is a poem for the new year,

for the drawing of dreams,

for the details and designs,

for desiring to do destiny

dynamically.

This is a poem for the creators,

for the people who make, for the hearty,

whose love is their art, an experience of gift,

an expression of soul, of clarity and drive,

tenderness and wit, an excavation of survival,

spirit and grit, an excursion into beauty

that belies expectations, an exclamation

of vulnerable resistance.

This is a poem for my friends,

for my family who fuel me,

feed me with their fierce

convictions of love and creativity,

who teach me that creativity and love

are the answers, and the question remains,

Will you follow your heart art?

This is a poem for Elijah’s embodiment of peace

This is a poem for Thea’s constructions of relationship

This is a poem for Elizabeth’s gifts of healing,

for my mother’s practice of prayer, my daughter’s

creative journey, my partner’s determination.

They all follow their heart art. They are creativity and love.

This is a poem for every person who has inspired me,

with their written and spoken words, actions, textures, colors,

songs, heart, motivation, flavors, shapes, persistence, charisma.

This is for all the artists who have moved me to say, “Yes!

I will follow my heart art! I will persist! I will create!”

This is for every artist who has reminded me

that I’m an artist.

This is for every person who has taught me

to acknowledge and offer my gifts

even when—

especially when—

I am sad and the world is in turmoil.

This is for every person who has emphasized each moment

to create hope, make change, compost pain, begin anew.

Joy Harjo, Nawal el Saadawi, Audre Lorde, Gloria Anzaldua are just a few, who,

by following their calling to write, called to me, affirmed my affinity

for feeling through words, and I do my best

to answer, to contribute, to listen to my calling to create

by writing words

in honor of justice and goodness

And I remember

daily creativity and love are the answers

for making a better world

I echo the calls,

enact vulnerable resistance,

invite creativity and love

This is a poem for the new year,

for the drawing of dreams,

for the details and designs,

for desiring to do destiny

dynamically.

This is a poem for more heart art.
